WHAT A SEASON!!!
Coach Pitch Jets complete season with
six straight tournament championships.
What started as an idea, to get our Allstar Team started
early, ended on Sunday, August 10th in Morgantown, IN
as one of the most unbelievable seasons anyone could have
imagined, let alone experience.
Our Jets entered six tournaments, and won each one. That's
crazy!! Playing against the toughest competition in the
State of Ohio, and later against teams from surrounding
states, The Jets compiled a 31-2 tournament record.
The initial thoughts were to play area Travel Teams non-
league games, to see how we stack up against what are
commonly considered the best. "Travel" evokes a
certain aura, like it's far better ball than what our
"Recreation" Leagues play. In many cases, that is
true. But, not with the talented group of players we
have here at Crossroads.
The 40-2 overall record includes losses in the first two
games. In our Allstar opener, The Jets got blasted by
the Hilliard Colts, 21-3. We were shell shocked, and
probably thinking this may not be such a good idea.
Three weeks later, on the road in our second game,
we lost to the same Colts, 6-5. From that point on,
with a few roster moves, The Jets reeled off 21 straight
victorys, before losing in the opening game of the
Dayton Tournament, which they came back and
won, outscoring their opponents in the four wins
44-7.
A very notable non-league double header took place in
late May in Mansfield. Call it hindsight, oversight, or,
just inexperience or lack of knowledge, but, we did
not enter our squad in the State Tournament. The
2008 State Champions are The Mansfield Mud Hens .
The Jets swept the Mud Hens, 8-3 and 12-5. It's one
of those things that make you go Hmmmmmmm???
Seven players hit over .500. This was a very solid
defensive team, allowing a miniscule 4.2 runs per
game. Individual stars abound, both with the bat
and the glove. The team truly had a different star
each game.
Seasons change, and in Youth Baseball, no one knows
what next season will bring, as these youngsters move
up to their next phase, kid pitch. But, as their trophy
cases suggest, this was one magical season, enjoyed
by the players, coaches, parents and fans who have
memories to last a lifetime.
The West Columbus Baseball Club is extremely proud
of our Coach Pitch Allstar Jets, and wish to extend our
congratulations to Coach George Holly, Assistant
Coaches Charlie Gahn, Matt Larison and Shane
Carter. Great Job!!
